Calculus is a study of instantaneous behavior at points of function. The actual discovery of this beautiful subject was due to Sir Issac Newton (1642-1727) of England and to Wilhelm Leibnitz (1646 – 1716) of Germany. Both invented and studied it at the same time independently. The study of differential and integral calculus the two branches of calculus needs a basic knowledge of classical algebra, analytical geometry and Euclidean geometry. Differential calculus studies the instantaneous rate of change of a function. Since limiting process is fundamental to the process of finding differential coefficient of a function first the concept of limits is introduced.
Integral calculus was invented in an attempt to determine the area bounded by curves by dividing into infinite numbers of infinitesimal small areas and taking the sum of all these small areas. The term integration signifies summation.
